A gallery talk will take place on Thursday, December 7 at 7pm the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG) to complement The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA)’s landmark Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA Exhibition Condemned To Be Modern. The lively discussion will be between Condemned To Be Modern exhibition artist Felipe Dulzaides and notable architect, author, and San Josť State University professor John Loomis. The conversation will encompass the remarkable history and architecture of Havana’s Escuelas Nacionales de Arte (National Art Schools), constructed during the early days of the Cuban Revolution. Born in Havana, Dulzaides has exhibited his work internationally and is currently engaged in a long-term project titled Utopia Possible (1999-2015) that investigates the architectural history and contemporary reality of the schools. Loomis is an architect, author, and professor at San Josť State University. His book Revolution of Forms: Cuba’s Forgotten Art Schools examines the convergence of architecture, ideology and culture in 1960s Cuba through the design for the National Art Schools. Condemned To Be Modern is part of PST: LA/LA, a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles. The Gallery is open Thursdays through Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.
