About the book:

It might surprise you who’s a fan of poetry — when it meets them where they are.

In 2012, Brian Sonia-Wallace set up a typewriter on the street with a sign that said “Poetry Store” and discovered something surprising: all over America, people want poems. Over 5,000 poems later, this book is a deep dive into communities across America, and the desperate desire to be listened to and heard that the author found.

We are proud to partner with Book Soup for this virtual event.

What to expect:

Just because this launch is on Zoom doesn't mean it can't be an EVENT! Get ready for...

1. The first Zoom typewriter parade! If you have a typewriter, join in -- we want 100 typewriters on Zoom!

2. A reading from The Poetry of Strangers, Brian Sonia-Wallace's new book about traveling the US writing poetry for passersby on a manual typewriter. It's a book about what it means to listen and about loneliness and community in America. How fitting. It's also as close to seeing the country as we may get for a while. However, the beauty of an online event is it means we'll have...

3. Lots of the people and communities represented in the book celebrating the launch with us! With live painting in North Dakota, pagan ritual in Salem, Mass, a live DJ in Berlin, and more. Plus curated break-out rooms for interaction and discussion, like if it was a real party.

4. Books available for purchase from Book Soup.

Why it matters:

I set out to write a book about dying American institutions, about nostalgia, loneliness, and community, as revealed by my work as a typewriter poet. What resulted was a book about listening -- how we hear each other, how we show up for each other, and how community happens despite all odds. This book has been the end result of 3 years of research across various margins of society. It's not all heavy. It asks, "What would it mean to call every stranger, friend?" but also, "Can I get this typewriter through TSA?"
