On the heels of earning a similar award for one of its residential projects in Santa Monica, Goldrich Kest has earned two more “Community of Quality” honors for properties serving low-income seniors — the Burlington Arms and Grandview Terrace, both in Los Angeles. The company, which is one of California’s largest and most successful privately owned real estate builders and property managers, earned the award for successfully meeting and exceeding stringent criteria established by the National Affordable Housing Management Association (NAHMA).
“The Communities of Quality award recognizes the achievements of affordable housing providers who make an unprecedented contribution to serving seniors of modest means by supplying essential programs and services for its residents. Goldrich Kest does just that and also is being recognized for providing quality housing that is both safe and healthy,” said NAHMA President Timothy Zaleski. “These awards bring valuable, well-deserved attention to the important work the entire industry is doing.”
Both the Burlington Arms and Grandview Terrace apartments cater to those 62+ and/or who are disabled. What distinguishes the properties from others serving seniors is the range of activities they offer from computer classes and yoga to arts and crafts and salsa dancing. In addition, management takes residents on monthly excursions to nearby museums, entertainment venues and even shows like Cirque du Soleil to keep them happy and engaged.
NAHMA is the leading voice for affordable housing management, advocating on behalf of multifamily property managers and owners whose mission is to provide quality affordable housing. NAHMA supports legislative and regulatory policy that promotes the development and preservation of decent and safe affordable housing, is a vital resource for technical education and information and fosters strategic relations between government and industry. NAHMA’s membership represents 75 percent of the affordable housing industry, and includes its most distinguished multifamily owners and management companies.
Goldrich Kest is a privately owned family-run company that can trace its origins back more than 60 years to two entrepreneurs and holocaust survivors, Jona Goldrich and Sol Kest, who parlayed their meager savings into an empire. The company first gained prominence in the 1960s by developing condominium projects throughout Southern California. By 1968, they were among the pioneer developers of Marina Del Rey where they built one of the first luxury apartment complexes at the marina, which was previously considered swampland. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the company continued adding government-assisted housing to its portfolio and rapidly became one of California’s largest developers of government-assisted apartments. In the 1980s, it expanded outside of California, entering into commercial, retail and industrial markets throughout the United States. Today, the second generation of the Goldrich and Kest families, referred to in-house as “G2,” continue to build upon the eponymous company’s ever-expanding portfolio consisting of 122 apartment buildings with 13,544 units, 5 marinas, 24 senior living facilities and more than 6 million square feet of non-residential space.
