Rancho Camulos is an 1800 acre working ranch that was established in 1853 by Ygnacio del Valle in the eastern part of Ventura County. 10 acres that include the orginal adobe home and ranch buildings have been set aside for the Rancho Camulos Musuem which is a National Historic Landmark. The site originally was a Tataviam Indian village known as Kamulus.
Rancho Camulos became a popular tourist destination and famous as the "home of Ramona" after the novel Ramona by Helen Hunt Jackson was published in 1884. Jackson wrote the book to increase awareness of the plight of the California Indians. However, tourists were drawn to the area by the romanticized "Californio" life depicted in the book. The railroad even located a station across the road to accomodate them. This novel is still popular and in print today. There have been several movies based on it, including the original 1910 D.W. Griffith film starring Mary Pickford. Many of the scenes were filmed on location at the rancho. You can see the 11 minute film in the museum. A visit to Rancho Camulos, and the rest of Ventura County's Heritage Valley, is a rare opportunity to step back in time to see and experience Southern California much as it was in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The adobe is a 10,000 square foot U shaped home.
The original L shaped portion was built in 1853 and it was enlarged in 1880.
|The chapel was built in 1867. |
|This California Black Walnut tree is the last survivor of four seedlings planted by the del Valle family circa 1870 at Rancho Camulos. It is approximately 25' in circumference, and, as you can see, it's huge branches require quite a bit of support.|
Volunteer docents give guided tours Saturday from 1:00-4:00p.m. and by appointment. They also have special programs for school children. Call for more information. The museum is closed to the public during December & January.
