ABOUT: Using art, artifacts and photography this exhibit explores the subtle and profound gender discrimination that women in stand-up comedy confront on a daily basis. By sharing the stories of women in stand-up comedy in Los Angeles, the exhibit opens up a larger discussion about sexism in male-dominated industries.

WHY STAND-UP? Despite the success of a handful of high-profile female comedians, white men are still considered the “default” in stand-up comedy. Comedy show line-ups are filled with men, and audiences still largely expect to see men on stage. Women pursuing careers in stand-up comedy today face a great deal of sexism. Some of it is unabashed misogyny, but a lot of the sexism in comedy is structural, even unintentional. Laughing Matters highlights the ways in which this misogyny infiltrates their lives, from representations in the media to stage clothing, Internet trolls, and comedy club lineups.
