Hybrids and Mongrels

Los Angeles, Ca.
- Highways Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Los Angeles artist Carol Es. This new collection of recent paintings and drawings, Hybrids and Mongrels, is the artist's representation of biology and genetic inheritance.

"Am I a hybrid, or a mongrel?" a question that many of us have asked in one way or another. For Carol Es the answer is found in dream-like landscapes that combine simple, organic design with playful mockery, science and wry humor.

Garment patterns used throughout the work were initially a subconscious reaction to her childhood - reclaiming the tools of a family trade that had previously been reminders of many dark personal memories. As she began to meld this media with scientific, botanical and cartoon imagery, the universality of the work emerged.

Mechanisms of heredity are essentially the same for all complex life forms, and genealogical questions arise when we think about who we are, where we came from, and how we are related to other living things. A visual question-and-answer to the peculiarities and mysteries of nature vs. nurture, Hybrids and Mongrels was inspired by Mendelian Genetics.

Gregor Mendel was the 19th century Austrian scientist who created the basis of modern genetic science by experimenting on pea plants. A monk in a Czechoslovakian monastery, Mendel bred thousands of pea plant hybrids with different traits, such as blossom color, pod color, shape and position. He concluded that physical traits are passed through the genetic factors we now know as dominant-recessive inheritance.

The idea that dysfunction, habit, mutation and contagion in both physiology and botany can be part of an evolutionary process in creating art is explored in the work, venerating both the artist’s ancestry, and the divine invention of nature.

I was one of the lucky folks in the packed audience attending the Charles Phoenix Retro Slide Show last night (June 16th @ 8:30 pm), “Under the Stars" at the Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood. Thanks to our ever-gracious "Hostess With the Mostest" Andrea (Eye Spy LA editor extrordinaire), the evening began with a delectable picnic on the grounds just outside the theater. We dined on a wonderful cold salmon, several salads and extras, enjoyed chocolate-dipped strawberries and other sweets, and a nice selection of beverages. Being "in the know" and a regular website visitor, I was able to obtain the Eye Spy LA discount of 20% off. Apres picnic, we strolled into the historic Ford Amphitheater with plenty time to settle into our seats before the entertainment began. And entertaining is the key word here. The effervescent Charles Phoenix, dressed in Mickey Mouse club red and white striped jacket and white bucks (and modeling Mouseketeer ears to boot), gave us a brief and fascinating history .....

As a long-time art collector, I am not easily impressed. When I visited Carlotta's Passion, I was delighted to find this top notch gallery tucked away in a fairly obscure part of Los Angeles. I bought several paintings from Mr. Squires, both because the prices were fair and I loved the work. Two of my acquisitions are decidedly of investment quality. I am returning to have Bob's restorer work on another piece that is dear to me. Finally, I must say that my wife and I were humbled by Bob's profound knowledge about so many schools of fine art. .....

Never take a course run by Kelly Morgan!
The person running this workshop, Kelly Morgan, is dishonest and definitely not to be trusted. Don't give her your money. She is not about the "Artist's Way" she IS all about getting your money up front and not following through on her word. BEWARE!

06/18/2006 - not a retarded wanna be

Actually I find this neighborhood to be full of cheesy "wanna be's" and if you call the music at this farmer's market "good jazz tunes" you must be a music retard.

About 6 years ago the downtown "artist" district used to actually be that...an area where ARTISTS lived and worked. However, since the developers (ie: KOR Group and so on)came in the neighborhood is just full of a bunch of loser wanna be's willing to pay $800,000+ for a run down "artist's loft". Infact, if you ever bothered to talk to any of the people living in the "hip artist's district" now they may tell you they are "artists" but those people couldn't make a meaningful piece of art to save their lives, let alone SELL a piece of artwork (unless their mother counts as a client).

As for farmer's markets- I'm gonna stick to the DOWNTOWN one on Wed. where the people are actually there to buy fresh tomatoes- not to look hip and arty.
