THAR SHE BLOWS: A WHALE OF A TALE

Southern California beach towns are great places to visit anytime. Scenic Newport Beach is no exception. The main attraction here is the harbor and the best way to enjoy it is to get out on the water. Kayak or paddleboard in the back bay, take a cruise around the harbor, or do like we did recently and go whale watching...

BIDDY MASON PARK
Biddy Mason Park (3rd & Broadway) behind the Bradbury building in historic Downtown L.A.

Biddy Mason walked to California as a slave behind her master's wagon in the mid 1800's. A few years later she was able to petition for her freedom - California was anti-slavery. She went on to own a house and other parcels of property, run an orphanage and found a church in what is now Downtown L.A. The park is a cool oasis with trees, a water fountain, tables and chairs. A series of commemorative plaques tell her story.

READ MORE MULHOLLAND SCENIC PARKWAY A scenic drive along Mulholland Drive is one of the things I generally recommend to do on Valentine's Day especially if Cupid shoots Mother Nature with a love arrow, and it turns out to be a beautiful day. This is always a romantic and scenic drive on any clear day...

READ MORE GEE WHIZ! RIDING THE AERIAL TRAM IN PALM SPRINGS

One of the things I've always wanted to do is ride the tram from Palm Springs to the snow covered peaks above. The idea of sitting around a pool in the hot desert until baked well done (about 5 minutes) and then heading up a mountain in a matter of minutes and throwing a snowball to cool off was quite compelling...

READ MORE FOUR BLOCKS OF BIG & BEAUTIFUL - GRAND PARK

The last block of Grand Park officially opens with a burst of fireworks. Eye Spy LA went to the Grand Park Block Party last Saturday to celebrate.

I wouldn't exactly characterize this as a party, it was too subdued for that, but I have high hopes for this park becoming the central gathering place for everyone in L.A. that we have so lacked in the past. From the tone of the politicos that were speechifying at the event they do too and there are some interesting events coming up including a Pooch Party this Sunday afternoon. And it is so easy to get there...

READ MORE HOT NIGHTS AT COOL EVENTS IN CHINATOWN

Eye Spy LA spent a colorful, fun and entertaining summer night in Chinatown last year. But this is a great place to visit anytime and is close to other places like Olvera Street, Union Station and other Downtown L.A. destinations. And don't forget the parade and festival for Chinese New Year. This year the Summer Nights events start in July...

GRAND PERFORMANCES IN A GRAND SETTING

A grand reason to visit Downtown Los Angeles in the summer is to take in a Grand Performance at California Plaza. Presenting multiple free performances each week all summer long, Grand Performances are as diverse and eclectic as our city. And there is plenty to do and see nearby, making this a great staycation destination or a brilliant place to take out of town visitors...

2 THINGS I'VE NEVER DONE AT DISNEYLAND UNTIL NOW: CLUB 33 AND LILLY BELLE PRESIDENTIAL TRAIN CAR

On one Sunday in December, I was able to experience two things that are usually not available to the general public. The first, of course, was Club 33, a members-only restaurant that is in New Orleans Square. Thankfully, one of the Assistant Organizers of my dining group, Pleasure Palate, was a member and was able to bring a group of us in for lunch. Believe me, it wasn't free, but it was worth it.

Disneyland is definitely the place to be for the holidays. Take a look at all the lights.

Find out what's behind that magical door to Club 33. You may never go there, but you'll feel like you have after reading this...

READ MORE EXPLORING L.A.'S CULTURAL DIVERSITY ONE BITE AT A TIME

In August 2009, two enterprising USC Grads, Jeff Okita and Alex Tao, launched one of Los Angeles' premiere food tour companies, Six Taste. Six Taste is so called because it hints at the possible discovery of a new taste beyond sweet, sour, salty, bitter and savory through one of their many weekly tours. Tour destinations include a Downtown LA Food Tour, Hollywood Food Tour, New Chinatown Food Tour and much more.

I took the Six Taste Delicious Dumpling Tour in Arcadia, CA. The focus of the tour was on Taiwanese food and apparently, Arcadia has become quite a mecca for this type of cuisine...

READ MORE CLOWNING AROUND AT EL PUEBLO

El Pueblo Historic Park and Olvera Street, across from Union Station in Downtown L.A., is a colorful destination anytime and there is almost always something going on there. Last Sunday the color quotient was quadrupled as a troop of crazily costumed clowns came into town to entertain the crowd in La Plaza...

READ MORE SEEING STARS AT THE GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY

Stargazing? You might spot a few at the latest celebrity dining hotspot or you could gaze at the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but the best place to go in Los Angeles for some serious star sightings is the world-renowned Griffith Observatory. Considered the crown jewel of Griffith Park, this iconic landmark perched in the verdant hills near the famous Hollywood sign lords over the city with its telescopic view of the Basin, Downtown, Hollywood and the Pacific Ocean...

READ MORE CULVER CITY - THE HEART OF SCREENLAND

Thanks to some smart planning and reinvestment by the local business community, downtown Culver City has become one of the hottest and most happening hangs on the Westside. The area echoes the feel of NYC’s Chelsea and SoHo districts with its wide, clean crisscrossing streets and tree-lined sidewalks offering fine dining establishments, shops, theatres and historic landmarks all within a five-block radius...

READ MORE TAKE A TOUR (JUST ONCE) AT NBC STUDIO IN BURBANK

Ever since the NBC Universal merger in 2004, rumors circulated as to whether or not the only walking television tour at NBC Studios would continue. This popular tour is still going strong, although there is less to see on their studio backlots as NBC slowly transitions into their headquarters in Universal City. While the fate of this walking 70-minute tour is yet unknown, currently it is enjoying a renewed interest with locals and tourists who want to experience this behind-the-scenes look at where and how television is made...
