SPRING AWAKENING RETURNED ALREADY

It's not been long since Spring Awakening arrived at the big Ahmanson Theatre after winning all those 2007 Tony awards on Broadway and showed everyone how entertaining it is to portray teen sexual exploration in a world of cruel and clueless grownups sung to a pop-rock score. The formula gave us the show Glee, and now, returning the favor, we have a small theater revival of Spring Awakening as though the high schoolers themselves were putting on the show.

The live musicians, enthusiastic and rough-around-the edges young performers, and the up-close setting intensified the power of the mounting passions in this teen tragedy. Kate Sullivan's direction wasted no time and figured out clever solutions for how to move around a large cast on a small stage. Brandon Baruch's lighting design, and his murky fogs, cleverly created depth and carved out areas of interest. I think Ms. Sullivan would be perfect bring to LA Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, which showed how entertaining political theater can be with a rock score.

SPRING AWAKENING ran March through April 22 at The Theatre of Arts Egyptian Arena Stage, 1625 N. Las Palmas in Hollywood.
