03/28/2005 - Day Trip to the Antelope Valley
Blooming flowers and green hills make this the best time of the year for a day trip to the Antelope Valley area in the northeast corner of Los Angeles County.

The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve is located about 15 miles west of Lancaster. From Los Angeles take I-5 North to CA 14 North to Lancaster (46.1 miles) and look for the sign on the right - at Avenue I.

We saw a coyote run across the highway and I know he will eat almost anything – good thing we stayed in the car.

The Jane S. Pinheiro Interpretive Center was very interesting and I bought a package of seeds. The center ran out of California poppy seeds and I purchased a package of perennial lupine $1.50.

Life in the Poppy Reserve: antelope, badgers, black-tailed jackrabbits, ground squirrels, cottontails, owls, sparrows, meadowlarks, quail, roadrunners, red-tailed hawks, lizards, butterflies, ladybird beetles, etc.

Flora: Acton daisy, hairy lotus, locoweed seedpods, wild parsley, fiddlenecks, cream cups, blue dicks, coreopsis, owl’s clover, etc.

We went to Crazy Otto’s Diner (33317 Santiago Rd Acton, CA 93510) – The Omelette House of the Valley open 7 days a week, breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have been in the Ripley’s Believe or Not twice – once in 1993 and again in 2002 breaking the world record for the largest omelette:
ingredients were 34,000 eggs, 200 pounds of cheese, 50 gallons of milk, 500 pounds of onions and 500 pounds of bell pepper and 120 gallons of crushed tomatoes. It was cooked on 11 portable grills and took approximately and one half hours. Over 200 volunteers helped to bring the world record back to the US where it belongs. Size was: 1,850 square feet.

Vasquez Rocks is a 745 acre Los Angeles County Park, located in Agua Dulce midway between Santa Clarita and Palmdale. Self-guided geological and historical tours can be found along trails in the park.

08/26/2010 - LOS ANGELES by Charles Phoenix: GIANT SEASCAPE, SOMEWHERE, USA, 1954 Week of August 26th, 2010
A gent and tot pose together on a not-quite-cornered, teal frieze-covered armchair that, for some reason, reminds me of a bumper car. It looks so strong and sturdy. Behind them, windowless walls are papered in a rare Mexican pebble print and dressed with an unexpected bamboo pattern on one wall and a CinemaScope-scale scape of ocean waves splashing on a rocky shore on the other. That smart, cool blue summer suit goes perfectly with ......

08/25/2010 - LOS ANGELES by M.R. Hunter: High Tea in LA - There are plenty (maybe too many) coffee shops throughout the area, but tearooms are growing more popular with their own unique ambiance and charm. The old tradition of making time for a spot of afternoon tea is becoming hipper than stopping at a PinkBerry and a lot cooler than an iced latte from Starbucks. Although you can enjoy a cup of tea from almost any coffee chain establishment, the place to savor exotic teas and possibly a sliver of cake is at your local tearoom. 08/25/2010 - SANTA MONICA by M.R. Hunter: WWII may be over in Arthur Miller’s devastating tragedy, but in the comfortable middle-class, Keller household an entirely insidious and deeply more personal war is about to be waged. Taking no prisoners in this quietly unfolding plot, each character must confront a terrible truth they wish to deny. The consequences are shattering, the message a warning against the dehumanizing effect of big business when there is no ethical filter to keep it in restraint. 08/18/2010 - LOS ANGELES by M.R. Hunter: Only one out of the last ten plays I have reviewed was by a woman playwright. 1 in 10. Not very good odds if you’re a female trying to break into the largely male dominant stage scene. But the grassroots organization, Los Angeles Female Playwrights Initiative (FPI) is taking action and focusing on positive change through local support, activism, and a commissioned study of the past decade fo ......WOMEN TAKE BACK THE STAGE: THE LOS ANGELES FEMALE PLAYWRIGHTS INITIATIVE

I’m not sure if he’s staring at the gracious tablescape or that hypnotizing spiral staircase leading to and from the second floor. When was the last time you saw a spiral staircase at 35,000 feet? The knock-you-on-the-side-of-your-head stock characters are of the typical all-American high school trope: the bad girl that smokes out front, a frustrated history teacher, an ambitious principal, and a letch masquerading as a mathematics teacher.
